This article experimentally assesses the out-of-plane bending behavior of six glulam panels connected with adhesive-free timber joints. Our experiments revealed that tested panels exhibit satisfactory ductility, load carrying capacity, bending moment and rotational angle under four point bending loads.
Results revealed that glulam panel with flat timber connector 2 showed less damage and deformation during elastic stage due to lower delamination rate and smaller displacement at load point. Furthermore, specimen 3 displayed stiffer performance post yield phase with an exceptional slope ratio of up to 121%.
Phenol resorcinol products have been recommended as suitable solutions for bonding wood and timber-based materials in applications like glulam beams. These products offer excellent resistance against moisture, heat and chemicals; furthermore they’re easy to use with an opaque glueline perfect for visible areas. Melamine urea resin also makes an excellent choice because of its water repellence properties as well as long durability.
