1. Plan your garden
If you want to make your garden look great, you need to start by planning it. This will help you choose the right plants for your space and get them in the best place for maximum harvest potential.
A good garden plan will consider the environment and factors like sun, shade, water, drainage and foot traffic patterns. It will also take into account the balance between lawn, shrubs, flowers and vegetables.
Using a scale map or even paper cut-outs of different shapes can help you to visualise your new garden and work out where everything should go.
It’s important to pick a location that receives enough sunlight, and to consider which direction the garden faces (north, south, east or west). This will affect how much light, warmth and moisture the area offers.
2. Create a water feature
Water is a natural element that can add ornamental interest, soothing sound and a habitat for wildlife in any garden. It can take many forms – from a simple tabletop fountain to a full-blown pond.
Creating a water feature in your garden doesn’t have to be difficult or costly, especially if you’re a DIYer. In fact, it’s the easiest way to create a focal point in your backyard – but you must be mindful of ensuring that the feature makes a good, relaxing sound.
3. Add a birdbath
Keeping a bird bath in your garden is one of the best ways to attract more birds. It’s also an easy way to ensure that they always have access to water, which they need for drinking and bathing.
Whether you want to add a simple ceramic basin or a concrete birdbath, there are plenty of options available. Each material offers its own advantages.
For example, concrete birdbaths are strong enough to withstand storms and high winds. They also tend to stay cleaner since dirt doesn’t stick as easily to them.
To keep your garden looking fresh, make sure to clean the birdbath regularly. It’s not a difficult task, and it will help to break up any algae that may have built up.
4. Make a pond
Adding a pond to your garden is one of the best ways to incorporate wildlife into your plot. Whether you make a small pond in a container or a large pond in the lawn, you’ll be surprised at how quickly aquatic creatures will start visiting.
Keeping your pond clean is important for wildlife, so add plants that will help to keep the water clean and clear. A mix of deep water, floating and marginal pond plants are ideal.
The pond should be positioned in a location that is warm, sunny and has minimal slope. This makes it more likely that tadpoles and dragonflies will thrive.
Before you begin digging, it’s a good idea to mark the area out on the ground with a rope or hose pipe. It’s also a good idea to include some shallow areas, such as a gently sloping ’beach’.
