Repairing the Latch

Over time, a door latch may develop issues preventing it from closing securely. This may be caused by structural movement in the home, expansion and contraction of materials or simply wear and tear – sometimes just an adjustment is enough to restore proper operation of a latch system.

One of the most frequently occurring problems is when the metal tab inside of a strike plate has become bent and prevented latches from catching properly. With a screwdriver, gently bend this tab until it catches properly before removing and adjusting as necessary for optimal alignment.

Misaligning of the latch can occur if its strike plate does not lie flush against the edge of its frame. In such an instance, some wood surrounding it must be chiseled away to reposition it and ensure it aligns correctly with the latch.
