How to Build a Shed Planter Box
Shed flower boxes add style and flowers to your shed, office shed, playhouse or guest house with ease. Easy installation makes these an essential outdoor building component.
Planter boxes are an effective and versatile solution for growing flowers, herbs, and shrubs in any space. Their design makes arranging your garden easy; creating clear sections while offering easy landscaping options.
Size
Flower boxes add the perfect finishing touch to any shed, guest shed, playhouse or office shed, making the building appear impressively stylish. Although small in size, flower boxes can make a dramatic impactful statement about what your shed stands for and add value and curb appeal to your home.
As part of your planning for a shed purchase, it is essential that you consider how much space will be used to store items. If your garage has become overflowing with goods that need to be stored somewhere else, perhaps moving some to a larger shed would be worthwhile. It is also wise to keep wind ratings in mind; these indicate how high winds might alter its structure.
One way of estimating the size of a shed is using measurements and graph paper to create a drawing. Arrange large equipment, boxes, lawn furniture or any other items you plan to store in your shed onto the graph paper with enough room between each item for easy movement in and out. This will allow you to visualize your space more clearly while also making sure there is ample space without crowding out valuable storage areas or hampering access for items you need quickly and easily.
Once you’ve selected the size and layout for your shed, it’s time to begin construction. There are a couple of options available when building from a kit; pre-cut materials may help save time and money on this project while building from scratch will require purchasing all required materials.
Be sure to include windows when building your shed; this will add plenty of natural light and visual interest. Windows can be placed either on the side or front, depending on your desired look.
For our window box, we used reclaimed pallet timber that had been sanded down and stained a gorgeous gray hue, secured to the inside of our shed with pocket screws that conceal their heads from view – giving our shed a custom and finished look while keeping costs down.
Materials
Shed flower boxes can transform an outdoor building from functional space into an eye-catching addition of your home. There are various shaped and sizes of shed planters available to meet any garden style or decor; made from different materials they make an eye-catching statement while adding some greenery into open areas or patios. Furthermore, shed planters add instant curb appeal by welcoming visitors!
As the first step to building a shed planter, selecting the appropriate material is of key importance. Wood is often chosen due to its ease of construction and ability to be stained or painted to match your shed color scheme. Concrete also makes an appealing material choice and offers durability; weather-proofed designs can withstand heavy loads while being highly weather-resistant – however due to being quite heavy it must be considered carefully prior to installing any planter box.
Weathering steel offers another attractive solution, as its patina develops over time to resemble that of rust. Furthermore, its durability and low maintenance requirements make it ideal for garden shed planters; sealing can protect it against moisture intrusion. When choosing material for your shed planter sheds make sure to consider which plants you intend to grow; flowers and herbs tend to prefer shallow depth planters while deeper-rooted shrubs/small trees require deeper planters for their specific requirements.
Once you’ve decided upon the material type and acquired all necessary supplies, the next step will be purchasing and assembling your raised planter box. A pocket screw jig is an invaluable asset when constructing raised planter boxes as it helps you line up and drill pockets in their proper places – helping give it a professional and completed appearance.
Once your pocket screws are secure, add a layer of gravel at the bottom to improve drainage and then fill your planter with well-draining soil mix. Finally, choose sun or shade-adapted species when selecting flowers for your planter – or seek assistance at a local plant nursery who can advise on selecting what makes an effective garden!
Design
Window box planters make an attractive addition to a shed, adding color and life to the garden. This one was planted with Multibloom Capri Geraniums and deep green English Ivy vines; for an extra decorative touch, we used a stencil that mimicked garden crates; its bottom was lined with reclaimed pallet wood for better drainage.
Assembling the box was quick and simple with pocket screws – fasteners that are out of sight when complete, giving the project an attractive finished look. A Kreg Jig tool was used to drill pockets.
Battens were attached in the center of each long side to keep it from bowing out when filled with dirt. Once all slats had been cut, another pre-assembled long side was placed upside-down on top and secured using pocket screws.
Installation
As per your location and requirements for anchoring the planter box, research may be required in order to properly install and anchor it. If in doubt, seek assistance at your local plant nursery as they can provide expert advice regarding soil, plants and care in your area.
For easy and fast assembly of a raised planter box, pocket hole jig is highly recommended to make this project possible. Not only will it simplify and speed up assembly time but it can also assist with aligning slats on both long sides – once in place they can be attached with pocket screws for a strong and lasting frame.
Once the frames were complete, they were assembled onto the shed porch after it had been reworked, pressure washed, and weeded before installation. Flower boxes were filled with sun- and shade-loving blooms including thrillers, fillers, and spillers before receiving adequate irrigation and plant food feeds.
